Reading Opponents in Poker

It doesn’t matter which poker game you’re playing, the most important concept to master in every single poker game is the ability to read other players. Why is this so important? It’s because it dictates how you’ll play your hand. Think of it as your “spidey sense”, your personal radar that signals opportunity or trouble. For the purposes of this article, I will focus on reading online opponents and not face to face opponents. The only difference between the two is the lack of body language that can’t be present when you play at internet poker sites.

New players often ask “how do you read opponents” and the answer is “It varies”. I can tell you this: It has nothing to do with mind reading! Reading opponents is first and foremost accomplished trough observation, collection of data, and analysis of this data. Here’s a simple roadmap you can follow.

Start by Sensing the General Mood of the Table

Think of the world in black and white and answer the following question: Am I sitting at a tight table or an aggressive one? Keep in mind that this mood is in constant flux, so you need to reassess the question throughout the game. Typically, there are three factors that will influence the table’s mood.

1. Changes in players when someone is assigned to another table and is replaced by a new player
2. Changes in blind levels
3. Major shifts in player’s chip stacks

Once you’ve identified a table mood, look for cues listed above to see if things change. Adapt your play style in contrast to the table mood, meaning be more aggressive at a tight table, and be tighter at an aggressive table.

Evaluate individual Player Styles

Again, think in black and white and try to label each opponent as aggressive or as passive. How do you do this? Well, watch them! Even if you’re not personally involved in a hand, keep your eyes wide open and study what’s going on. Can you spot the ones who tend to raise a lot in late position? Can you spot the ones who tend to raise when everyone else checks? Can you spot the ones who call a lot and don’t raise a lot? Can you spot the ones who fold constantly when pressured? Can you spot the ones that go all in a lot? Can you spot the ones who like to check raise? Are you noticing changes in behaviors when someone becomes the short stack or the big stack? All of these questions help you assess the mood and style of a player. Again, remember that this will also changes and points 2 and 3 from above are valid indicators to watch for.

Bet to gather information

When you are involved in a hand and you’re just not sure about the strength of an opponent, just bet and study the reaction. Keep in mind however the analysis you’ve made of the player. Think of his profile – If you’re facing a conservative player that calls your bet, he probably has something. Next time, check and see what he does. Sometimes investing a little bit of chips to collect data will in fact save you from losing a lot more by making a bad play.
